Live music session with multi-instrumentalist Dan Turnbull, blending mechanical alt-blues, loops, beatboxing and traditional instrumentation.
Funke and the Two Tone Baby play The Green Door Store on Friday 12 March, as part of the Greebling Tour 2027. The night is presented by Love Thy Neighbour, and it's for 18s and over only.
If the name sounds like a full band, it's a bit of a trick: Funke and the Two Tone Baby is the pseudonym of Dan Turnbull, a Kent-based multi-instrumentalist who works as a one-man band. He describes his sound as mechanical alt-blues and loops, and the live set is where you can actually see how it's put together. He combines effects pedals, beatboxing and grooving bass lines with traditional instrumentation, powerful vocals and a relentless energy that carries the whole thing. It's a lot for one person to juggle on stage, and watching him build the tracks in real time is a good part of the draw.
It's a project that's grown quickly. In two years it's gone from pub gigs in Margate to more than 300 shows and festivals across the UK and Europe, and R2 Magazine described the music as 'new, exciting and innovative'. Sound of Confusion put it a bit more vividly, saying the live set gives the tracks a 'distinctive and contemporary twist' and gets audiences 'grooving like an apoplectic orang-utan'.
