A nine-man shanty folk group drawing on 200 years of traditional vocal repertoire, performing their maritime work songs and sea shanties.
Fisherman's Friends are playing the Brighton Dome on Thursday 19 September, with musicians Marcus Bonfanti and Simon Johnson joining them on stage. They're a nine-man shanty folk group from Port Isaac in Cornwall, and they've spent more than 25 years meeting on the Platt, their native harbour, to sing traditional songs of the sea handed down by their forefathers and raise money for charity.
It's a long way from where they started. They began singing sea shanties in a living room back in 1990, and two decades later they signed a million-pound record deal. Their album Port Isaac's Fisherman's Friends went gold, making them the first traditional folk act to land a UK top-ten album. Since then they've released ten albums, two feature films and a musical, and played at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, Hyde Park Proms in the Park, the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and to 80,000 rugby fans at Twickenham — all while holding down their day jobs. They're widely credited with sparking a revival of interest in shanty-style choral singing, and they draw from a repertoire of more than 200 sea shanties, folk songs and maritime work songs.

On the night, they'll be joined by Marcus Bonfanti and Simon Johnson, so it's a bit more than just the voices. The set will come from that same repertoire of traditional sea songs they've been singing since the living room days. Tickets are £35.25 guide price, and the show starts at 19:00 at the Brighton Dome on Church Street.
