An alternative comedy night featuring sketch, improv, character, physical and musical comedy, hosted by Leslie Bloom.
Extra Topping returns to Sweet at The Yellow Bok on Saturday 19 December, with the night starting at 7:30pm. It's an alternative comedy showcase that describes itself as 'comedy, but it ain't stand-up', and that's a fair summary of what you'll find. Instead of the usual one-person-one-mic format, the bill pulls from sketch, improv, character, physical and musical comedy — or anything that sits a little outside the traditional stand-up box. If you're used to the standard comedy club circuit, this is the one to go to when you want something that doesn't follow the usual rules.
Hosting the night is Leslie Bloom, who introduces herself as a fitness instructor, mother, investigator and occasional tarot card reader. The Reviews Hub has called Extra Topping 'Brighton's best loved alt comedy night' and 'the best alternative comedy', so it's got a bit of a reputation for being one of the city's more reliable spots for the offbeat side of things.
This particular date is part of a wider run at the same venue, which also took in 19 September, 17 October and 21 November. If you've caught any of those, you'll know the format: a variety of acts that don't all fit into the same category, held together by Bloom. It's the kind of night where you might see a sketch act followed by someone doing character work, then a musical set, rather than just a string of stand-up comics.
