Award-winning monthly queer and alternative comedy night featuring stand-ups, drag, and cabaret acts, strictly 18+.
If you are looking for a reliable, high-quality alternative for your Sunday night plans, the Down the Hatch Comedy Club is a fixture worth noting. This monthly event, held in the intimate setting of the Komedia Basement, focuses specifically on 'queer and alternative' comedy and cabaret. Since its launch in 2022, the club has gained significant traction, culminating in a major win as ‘BEST COMEDY FORMAT’ at the CHORTLE AWARDS 2024. The core mission is to provide a safe, welcoming platform for marginalized voices, celebrating the diversity that Brighton is known for among the LGBTQ+ community and allies. It consistently takes place on the first Sunday of every month.

Looking ahead to the autumn, the next confirmed date is Sunday, October 4, 2026. The doors open at 6:00 PM, giving you an hour to grab a drink before the show kicks off at 7:00 PM. Seating is unreserved cabaret style. The format is varied, featuring extraordinary queer stand-ups, character comedians, drag kings and queens, and other alternative acts, all guided by the resident MC, comedian and presenter Lee Peart. While the specific lineup for October is still under wraps, the club has previously hosted major names like James Acaster, Suzi Ruffell, and Olga Koch. The best part for your wallet is the price: tickets are only £6. Just remember that due to the nature of the content, the event is strictly for those over 18.
Beyond providing affordable entertainment, Down the Hatch maintains a strong commitment to local causes. For 2026, they have partnered with Allsorts Youth Project, a local organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ children and young people under 26 across Sussex. If you plan on making a full evening of it, they do offer a snack menu, including the option to pre-order Loaded Fries at a slight discount. It’s a well-regarded night that consistently delivers laughs while supporting both emerging talent and vital local youth services.
