Monthly award-winning queer and alternative comedy night (Chortle Award 2024) featuring resident MC Lee Peart and guests Kuan-Wen Huang, Alex Franklin, Twayna Mayne, and Kate Martin. Ages 18+.
If you're looking for something different on a Sunday night, the Down the Hatch Comedy Club is back at Komedia's Basement on Sunday, March 1st. This night has built a solid reputation since launching in 2022, focusing specifically on queer and alternative comedy, giving a platform to voices often overlooked. It’s clearly doing something right, as it picked up the 'BEST COMEDY FORMAT' award at the Chortle Awards in 2024. The venue itself, the Basement at 44-47 Gardner Street, is known for being intimate—low ceilings and cabaret seating—which many describe as the perfect atmosphere for a comedy club.

For the March 1st show, doors open at 6:00 PM, with the show kicking off at 7:00 PM. The night is anchored by resident MC Lee Peart, who hosts the event monthly. The lineup for this specific date includes Kuan-Wen Huang, Alex Franklin, Twayna Mayne, and Kate Martin. Considering the quality and the fact that tickets are only £6, it’s genuinely one of the better deals for a comedy night in the city. Just remember it’s strictly 18+ and seating is unreserved cabaret style, so if you want a good spot, getting there closer to the 6 PM door time might be wise. They also offer a snack menu, with the option to pre-order Loaded Fries if you want to save a little money.
If you can't make the March date, Down the Hatch runs consistently on the first Sunday of every month, with future dates already set for April 5th, June 7th, July 5th, September 6th, October 4th, and November 1st. Beyond providing a stage for alternative acts, the club also supports a local cause. Their charity partner for 2026 is the Allsorts Youth Project, a local organization that provides essential support, including groups and individual sessions, for LGBTQ+ children and young people (under 26) across Sussex.
