A collecting and reminiscing session about the historic Sussex Club, a venue that was fundamental for the lesbian community in Brighton and Hove.
If you have spent any time exploring the history of Brighton and Hove, you might have heard whispers about the Sussex Club. It was a basement venue in Regency Square that became a cornerstone for the local lesbian community. On Thursday, 25 June 2026, there is an opportunity to dive into that history during a collecting and reminiscing session held at the Brighton and Hove Museum. The event runs from 17:30 to 19:30 and serves as an extended prequel to the History Club session planned for September.

The session is designed for those who want to share their own stories, reconnect with old friends, or simply look through photographs from that era. It is a space for people to revisit the dramas and the daily life of the club, and there will even be some surprise guests joining the conversation. Beyond just looking back, the organisers—Queer in Brighton and Queer Heritage South—are also using the time to help people sign up for a social group, making it a practical way to connect with others interested in local LGBTQ+ history. The event is supported by Marlborough Productions and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Since the original Sussex Club was a basement venue, it is worth noting that this gathering takes place in the museum rather than the original site. If you are planning to attend, keep in mind that you will need to book or purchase a ticket beforehand, as registration is required. It is a straightforward way to contribute to the ongoing documentation of Brighton’s queer heritage while catching up with people who share a similar interest in the city's past.
