Nu-metal, pop-punk and emo night with local bands, free entry, 18+ event.
Despair & Ruin takes over The Hope & Ruin on Friday 30 October, a night that pulls together nu-metal, pop-punk and emo. It's billed as something more than a standard cover night, and the setlist makes it clear why: the bands will be tearing through Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy and Avril Lavigne.
The line-up is a proper Brighton gathering, with musicians from Ahsoka, CLT DRP, h_ngm_n, Had Sandy, Mulch, No Relief, PROM and Really Big Really Clever all involved. Rather than one band taking the stage, it's a collective of players from across the UK scene coming together for the night, so you'll see a fair few local faces on the bill.
The Hope & Ruin is the room above the Hope pub on Queens Road, a 150-capacity space that hosts live shows from local and international artists alongside a regular poetry night and the odd late-night club. There's a bar serving draught lagers, beers and ciders, plus the venue's own Hope & Ruin Mosaic Pale Ale, and a ground-floor bar to hang out in before and after the music. The room closes at midnight Sunday to Wednesday and 2am Thursday to Saturday.

Because it's a smaller room, once it hits capacity it runs on a one-in-one-out basis, so it's worth getting in early if you want to avoid the queue. Entry is free, and the night is strictly 18+. It starts at 7:30pm on Friday 30 October at The Hope & Ruin, 11-12 Queens Rd, Brighton BN1 3WA.
