Liverpool art college collective Deaf School perform their kaleidoscopic rock'n'roll cabaret and pop art music at The Prince Albert.
On Friday, 17 July, the Liverpool art college collective Deaf School is bringing their specific brand of rock'n'roll cabaret to The Prince Albert. If you’ve spent much time around the Brighton music scene, you’ll know the venue at 48 Trafalgar Street well; it’s got a capacity of only 100, which usually makes for a pretty focused atmosphere. The band has been around for over four decades, having formed a style that doesn't quite fit into a single box. They’re often credited with paving the way for the likes of Madness and Frankie Goes To Hollywood, mixing a bit of guitar noise with a more melodic, pop-art sensibility.

The line-up for this show includes key members Bette Bright, Enrico Cadillac Jnr, and Clive Langer. Their performances are often described as a bit of a cocktail of different influences—think exotic themes mixed with straightforward rock. You can expect to hear a range of material, from their early 70s tracks like 2nd Honeymoon to songs from their latest record, Let’s Do This Again Next Week. It’s a chance to see a group that has maintained a very specific niche in British music history, attracting a crowd that ranges from long-time art-rock fans to more unexpected followers, like the co-creator of Peppa Pig.
Doors are scheduled for 20:00, and tickets are currently priced between £23.50 and £27.00. Given the size of the room at the Albert, it’s a fairly intimate way to catch a band that usually carries a much larger stage presence. It’s a solid option for a Friday night if you’re interested in the Liverpool scene or just want to hear some well-crafted pop art music without the usual stadium distractions. The location is right in the heart of the North Laine, making it easy to get to for a drink before the music starts.
