A Victoriana-influenced live music gig with David Devant and His Spirit Wife, supported by Would-be-goods.
David Devant and His Spirit Wife are back at The Hope & Ruin on Saturday 20 March, their first Brighton date since a sell-out show here in December. They're a sextet whose vaudevillean stage show pairs wry, glam-influenced pop with film, slides and a steady stream of DIY props — they describe it as a multimedia assault on the senses akin to Ziggy Stardust via Vic Reeves' Big Night Out. The set will run through their 90s call to arms 'Ginger', alongside 'Cookie' and newer material.
Their recording career stretches from the debut Work, Love life, Miscellaneous to the more recent Cut Out and Keep Me, both of which are cited among their best. The show follows that December date, and their fans include comedian Dave Gorman and Art Brut's Eddie Argos. Supporting them are Would Be Goods, led by 80s cult label star Jessica Griffin; they'll play from their recent release Tears Before Bedtime plus favourites from five previous albums.
