DakhaBrakha play Concorde 2 on Wednesday 25 November, their only Brighton date this autumn. They're a world-music quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine, and the set is built around the folk songs they've spent two decades reworking.
The band formed in 2004 at the DAKH Center of Contemporary Art, brought together by theatre director Vladyslav Troitskyi. Since then, they've built their name on what they call 'ethnic chaos' — folk-based songs driven by striking vocals and theatrical stage effects that push traditional Ukrainian music into contemporary territory. It's a sound that starts with the old songs and pulls them forward, and the live show is where that theatrical side comes most clearly into view.
They've been together over twenty years now, so there's a long catalogue to draw from. The set leans on the folk roots they've always worked with, but the way they frame them is what gives the music its particular character. It's a quartet, and they're the only ones on the bill, so the whole night is theirs.
