Stand-up and jazz band recreating the 1940s club night, with the band playing a full jazz set after the show.
Comedy & Jazz comes to The Secret Comedy Club on Thursday 29 October, a night that puts stand-up and live music on the same stage rather than one after the other. The whole thing is built around the old link between the two: the smoky 1940s clubs where comedians riffed between bebop sets, and the later era of late-night TV when house bands punctuated the punchlines. Both rely on the same things — sharp timing, fearless improvisation, and the thrill of a live room — and the night leans into that.
It's not just a double bill. The band plays alongside the comedians, adding musical stings and a live soundtrack to the stand-up, before taking over with a full jazz set of their own. So you get the comedy and the music working together for the first half, and then the band stepping out on their own for the second. It's a bit of a throwback to how these two things used to share a room.
The venue is The Secret Comedy Club, tucked away in The Lanes at 42 Brighton Square, BN1 4HD. It's one of the city's smaller, more enclosed spots — they describe it as the most intimate and atmospheric comedy club in Brighton, and it picked up Best Fringe Venue in the 2021 Audience Choice Awards.
