Collect Call, Darcy and Bethany May share a bill at The Hope & Ruin on Friday 21 August, a triple header of Brighton-based acts. It's a long evening, running from 19:30 through to 23:00, with the three sets split across the night.
Collect Call is the electronic dream pop and indie project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Joseph Thorpe. He describes his sound as atmospheric soundscapes that blend angst, anxiety and hope, so it's the kind of set that leans into mood as much as melody. Darcy is a four-piece alternative rock band from around the city, playing what they call 'grunge-gaze' — a mix of 90s grunge and hazy shoegaze, held together by smooth, melodic vocals. Bethany May is an indie-folk and alternative project from the South Coast, moving between delicate acoustics and cinematic arrangements, and she's built a distinct presence on the local scene.
Between them, the three cover a fair bit of ground: the electronic textures of Collect Call, the loud-quiet-loud of Darcy's grunge-gaze, and the more stripped-back, folk-leaning side of Bethany May. It's a night of local music rather than a touring bill, with all three acts rooted here in Brighton and on the South Coast.
