Carole King's Tapestry: An Evening In Laurel Canyon

Carole King's Tapestry: An Evening In Laurel Canyon comes to Komedia on Sunday 22 November, with a live six-piece band taking on the music of Carole King and her 1971 album Tapestry. The whole thing is presented by the Lewes Music Group.

The night is split into two halves. The first brings together songs by the artists who lived and worked in Laurel Canyon, the hillside community overlooking Los Angeles' Sunset Strip that drew musicians together through the 1960s and 70s. It's a wide-reaching circle: Neil Young, James Taylor, The Byrds, The Mamas & The Papas, The Eagles, The Doors and Joni Mitchell all called it home. The second half turns to Carole King herself, with the band performing Tapestry in its entirety. The organisers describe the album as summing up that counterculture — a statement of togetherness, love, feminism and hope for the future.

It's a good way to hear the record in context, with the first half setting the scene and the second giving the album its own space. The band is a six-piece with vocals, so you'll hear the songs played through, not just as a medley. It's recommended for ages 14 and over, with under-16s accompanied by an adult.

The show is in the Komedia Basement at 44-47 Gardner Street, BN1 1UN. Doors open at 18:00, and the music starts at 19:00. Seating is unreserved cabaret style, so arrive early if you want a particular spot. Tickets are £15 for concessions and £20 standard.
