An introductory session for new members and players of all levels to learn and play backgammon with the Brighton Backgammon group.
If you have ever walked past a pub and wondered what people are actually doing when they are hunched over a board game with dice, you might have spotted a backgammon game in progress. It is one of those games that looks deceptively simple but has a bit of a reputation for being complex. If you have been curious about learning how to play, or if you already know the basics and want to find people to play with, the Brighton Backgammon group runs a regular beginners night that is worth knowing about.

The sessions take place at The Fitz Regent, located at 7-8 Castle Square. It is a fairly relaxed environment, and the group is set up to welcome anyone, regardless of whether you have never touched a board before or if you have played a few games in the past. The idea is to provide a space for people to learn the ropes or just get some practice in with others who are interested in the game. It is a recurring event, held on the second Tuesday of every month, and the sessions run from 18:00 until 23:00.
For those planning ahead, there are specific dates set for the rest of 2026. You can head down on June 9th, July 14th, August 11th, September 8th, or October 13th. There is no cost to attend, so it is a straightforward way to spend an evening if you are looking for something different to do in the city. Since it is a recurring monthly meetup, it is the kind of thing you can drop into whenever your schedule allows, without the pressure of committing to a long-term course or a formal club membership right away. It is simply a group of people meeting up to play, and if you are in Brighton and have an interest in the game, it is a practical option for getting involved.
