Monthly beginners and learning sessions for the backgammon community at The Fitz Regent.
If you have ever walked past The Fitz Regent on Castle Square and wondered what goes on inside during the quieter evenings, you might be interested to know about the regular backgammon sessions held there. Brighton Backgammon hosts a monthly 'Beginners Night' that is open to anyone, whether you are a seasoned player or someone who has never touched a board before. It is a straightforward setup: the group meets to play, learn, and build a local community around what is often described as the world's oldest board game.

The sessions run on the second Tuesday of every month, from 18:00 until 23:00. Since the venue is located at 7-8 Castle Square, it is quite central and easy to get to if you are already in the city centre. For those planning ahead, the confirmed dates for the rest of 2026 are 12 May, 9 June, 14 July, 11 August, 8 September, and 13 October. There is no cost to attend, as the event is free, which makes it a low-pressure way to spend a Tuesday evening if you are looking for a new hobby or just want to meet people who share an interest in the game.
The atmosphere is generally focused on learning and playing, rather than anything overly formal. Because the group is open to both existing members and newcomers, the dynamic tends to be quite welcoming for those who are just starting out. You do not need to bring anything specific, just yourself, and you can expect to find people there who are happy to explain the rules or play a few rounds. It is a consistent, recurring event, so if you cannot make it one month, there is always the following one to try out.
