A groundbreaking festival of hip hop dance theatre featuring world-class poppers, lockers, b-boys and b-girls, curated by Jonzi D. Includes a family matinee and an evening performance.
On Wednesday, 27 May 2026, Breakin' Convention returns to the Concert Hall at Brighton Dome. This festival has become a regular fixture for hip hop dance theatre, and as usual, itās being looked after by Jonzi D, who acts as the master of ceremonies. The setup is quite different from a standard theatre night because they use the entire building. Before the main performances even start, the foyer is filled with live DJs, graffiti artists, and freestyle dance sessions. Itās designed so you can get involved in workshops or just watch the dancers in the communal spaces, making the whole venue feel like part of the event rather than just a place to sit and watch a stage.

The 2026 programme brings together a mix of international acts and dancers from our own local scene. Youāll see Ivan Michael Blackstockās āTRAPLORDā, which picked up an Olivier award, alongside the international trio Femme Fatale and the b-boy collective ILL-Abilities. Itās a good opportunity to see how these global groups compare with the talent we have here in Brighton, as local crews like Streetfunk - Street Symphony, Project Female, Visual Poets, and Thread Temple are all part of the scheduled performances. It is important to check the specific line-up for each slot, though, as the groups appearing in the afternoon won't necessarily be the same as those performing at night.
There are two distinct sessions to choose from: a 2:30 PM matinee and a 7:30 PM evening show. The afternoon performance is framed as a family-friendly event, but the evening show comes with a 12+ age recommendation. This is due to the content of some of the pieces, which deal with themes like identity, mental health, and violence, and include strong language and the use of vapes on stage. In terms of cost, tickets are either Ā£15 or Ā£20. There are lower rates available, with tickets at Ā£12.50 for those under 26 or on low incomes, and Ā£10 for anyone under 18. If youāre booking your tickets online or by phone, there is a standard Ā£3.50 transaction fee per order to account for.
