BPO: Eric Vloeimans and Joanna MacGregor

Eric Vloeimans and Joanna MacGregor play The Cairns Theatre on Wednesday 18 November, a Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra presentation. It's a duo night: Vloeimans on trumpet and MacGregor on piano.

Vloeimans is a Dutch trumpeter, composer, record producer and songwriter who works across the modern, the traditional and the experimental, building timbral textures from the three. MacGregor is the BPO's Music Director and pianist, and she's a regular collaborator of his, so this isn't a one-off pairing. They describe the evening as one of high-octane virtuosity and soulful melody.

The programme pulls from a few different places. You'll hear Nina Simone, Jacques Brel and Meredith Monk alongside Vloeimans's own music, so it's a mix of jazz, song and his own writing. It's a wide reach for one set — Simone's jazz and soul, Brel's chanson and Monk's avant-garde theatre — and Vloeimans's own work sits in the middle of it.

If you're around that week, there's a second chance to catch him: Vloeimans also joins the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday 15 November for Dido and Aeneas at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange. So he's in town for two very different things in the same week — the opera on Sunday and this duo on Wednesday.
