Free gig by Los Angeles fuzz pop band Belcher and Calista Morgan's indie project Miler at The Hope & Ruin.
Belcher and Miler share a bill at The Hope & Ruin on Wednesday 19 November, with the night presented by Full Fat Promotions. It's a double bill that brings together two acts from opposite sides of the Atlantic: Belcher, a three-piece fuzz pop band from Los Angeles, and Miler, the indie alternative rock project of Calista Morgan, a Hastings-born artist now based here in Brighton.
Belcher describe their sound as sitting somewhere between Slow Pulp and Smashing Pumpkins, so you can get a fair idea of what to expect: fuzz pop with a bit of weight to it. It's that particular blend of melodic songwriting and distorted guitars, the kind of thing that works as well in a small room as it does on record. They're coming over from LA, so this is one of their UK dates.
Miler is the project of Calista Morgan, and it's rooted in the confessional tradition of songwriting. She draws on Florence + The Machine, Wolf Alice and Fleetwood Mac, and her voice shifts between soaring, tender vocals and a guttural grit. It's a sound that sits in the indie alternative rock camp, and she's a local artist, so this is a home show for her. The project is aimed at fans of Blondshell, Sharon Van Etten and Angel Olsen, so if those names ring a bell, you've got a good sense of the territory she's working in.
