A comedy quiz show where the audience faces comedians, with custard pies for losers and rule-breakers.
If you are looking for something a bit different during this year's Brighton Fringe, there is a show called Beat The Comic happening at the Laughing Horse @ a&o Hostel bar. It is essentially a quiz show, but with a twist: the audience gets to compete directly against the comedians. Ian Fox is the one running the show as the 'Quiz and Piemaster', and the whole thing is organised by the group Some Funny Cluckers. It is scheduled to run from the 21st to the 24th of May 2026, starting at 7:00 pm in the Front Room of the venue.

The format is fairly straightforward, involving general knowledge and trivia questions, but the stakes are a bit unusual. There is a physical element to the competition, specifically involving custard pies. If you lose a round, you get a pie in the face. The rules are quite strict and apply to everyone: if you say the word 'Pie', you get a pie. If you question the quizmaster, you get a pie. Even if you ask for the quizmaster to receive a pie, you end up with one yourself. It is worth noting that the show involves audience interaction, so you should be prepared for that if you decide to go.
Regarding the practical side of things, the event is strictly for adults, with an age restriction of 18+. They do have a 'Babes in Arms' policy, which means children under two years old are not permitted. The venue itself is accessible, featuring wheelchair access and accessible toilets, and they are happy to accommodate assistance dogs. The pricing is set at ยฃ5, operating under a 'Pay What You Want' model, which gives you some flexibility depending on your budget. It is a specific kind of comedy experience, so if you enjoy quiz formats with a chaotic, slapstick edge, this might be something to consider for your Fringe schedule.
