Comedian Katherine Ryan performs her stand-up show 'Firstborn Daughter', blending personal memoir with pop psychology, with a copy of her book included in the ticket price.
Katherine Ryan is coming to the Corn Exchange on Friday 23 October, where she'll be talking about her new book, Firstborn Daughter. It's a conversation rather than a stand-up set, and she'll be joined on stage by a special guest.
In Firstborn Daughter, Ryan turns her sharp, self-deprecating wit on the role she never auditioned for: the eldest daughter, hardwired from birth to manage everyone's emotions, schedules and crises but her own. The show blends personal memoir with pop psychology, drawing on Adler's birth order theory and the concept of parentification. Throughout, she keeps a running tally of famous fellow firstborn daughters, from Oprah to Taylor Swift to Princess Anne, and makes the case that an entire generation of women has been quietly running the show, unpaid and unacknowledged.

It's presented by Off The Kerb Productions, and the performance is strictly for ages 14 and over. Tickets are £44, and that includes a copy of the book, so you'll leave with the thing you've spent the evening hearing about. If you're a Brighton Dome or Brighton Festival member, you save £2 on full-price tickets. The show starts at 19:30, with doors opening at 18:45.
