Live performance by An Dannsa Dub, blending traditional Scottish Gaelic music with digital dub basslines and live instrumentation.
If you have been looking for something a bit different in Brighton's live music scene, An Dannsa Dub is coming to The Hope & Ruin on November 11th. This project, which formed in 2020, is built around a specific fusion: the energy of traditional Scottish music and Gaelic songs mixed with the heavy basslines of digital dub. The name itself, An Dannsa Dub, translates to 'The Dub Dance' in Gaelic, which gives you a pretty clear idea of what they are aiming for.

The project is a collaboration between dub vocalist and producer Tom Spirals and Scottish traditional musician Euan McLaughlin. They describe their sound as 'Future Dub from Ancient Scotland,' and their live shows are designed to bridge the gap between a traditional cèilidh session and a modern soundsystem arena. When you see them live, you can expect a mix of traditional dub production techniques layered with live instrumentation, specifically flute and fiddle, accompanied by Tom Spirals' vocals.
It is worth noting that this group has been gaining some recognition recently, having been nominated for 'Live act of the Year 2023/24' at both the MG Na Trad Awards and the Scottish Alternative Music Awards. They have also performed at various international festivals, including Dub Camp, Goa Sunsplash, and HIM Dub. Because of this, their audience tends to be a mix of people who enjoy Scottish folk, dub reggae, and dance music, all looking for that specific communal energy that comes from a soundsystem-focused performance.
Since the show is taking place at The Hope & Ruin, it will have that intimate, local venue feel that we are used to in Brighton. If you are interested in seeing how they translate that 'Future Dub' concept into a live setting, the performance on November 11th is the opportunity to catch them in town.
