An evening of seasonal folk songs, from sixteenth-century rounds and winter tunes by the Coppers and the Watersons to pub carols, by The Bee's Mouth Folk Choir.
The Bee's Mouth Folk Choir are playing St Augustine's Arts and Events Centre on Friday 11 December, with the night titled A Winter Evening With the Bees. It's a seasonal folk set, and the choir's repertoire runs a fair distance: they've got sixteenth-century rounds at one end and modern protest songs at the other, with some of their own original compositions mixed in. This particular evening draws on traditional winter tunes by the likes of the Coppers and the Watersons, newer numbers from Elvis Costello and Alison Krauss, and a sprinkling of pub carols, all sung from the heart.
The choir formed in 2022 around the idea of sharing the joy and connection of singing together, which they describe as something humans have always done to cope with hard times and celebrate the good. It's that same spirit that carries through to the music they're bringing to the stage here. If you're not one for the more polished side of seasonal song, the mix of old folk traditions and more contemporary names should give you a good sense of what they're about.
And it's not just a one-off. The choir rehearse every Monday from 7pm to 9pm at the Bee's Mouth on Western Road in Hove, and they're open to anyone who wants to come along and sing with them. So if you find yourself enjoying the night, there's a way to get involved rather than just watching from the audience.
