Hiraeth Folk Club 2nd birthday night of Celtic folk music with The Water Chorus, Far Darrig and Thomas Pruden.
The Water Chorus headline The Green Door Store on Sunday 2 August, as part of a night of Celtic folk music put on by Hiraeth Folk Club. It's a double celebration: the club is marking its second birthday, and the bill brings together three acts from different corners of the folk world.
The Water Chorus formed around London folk clubs after the pandemic and have since become a mainstay of the capital's youthful folk revival. They're a big sound for a folk band, with voice, fiddles, banjo, guitar, bouzouki and concertina all in the mix. They describe their own style as ranging from 'raucously celebratory' to 'eerily affecting', and the set reflects both ends: punky, upbeat arrangements on one hand, and atmospheric re-imaginings of ballads on the other.
Opening for them is Far Darrig, a Brighton-based folk four-piece. Their songs look at the lives, loves and struggles of working people from Ireland, England and the 'not so new world'. Alongside them is Thomas Pruden, who works with intricate fingerpicked acoustic guitar, an understated voice and lyrics drawn from the natural world.

Between the three, the night covers a fair bit of ground — from the loud, full-band energy of The Water Chorus to Far Darrig's focus on working-class lives and Pruden's quieter, nature-led songs. Tickets are £8, and the whole thing is at The Green Door Store on Trafalgar Street, BN1 4FQ, on Sunday 2 August.
