Solo character comedy with original songs and puppets about growing up with undiagnosed ADHD, by Lela Bergeron.
Lela Bergeron brings A Head Full of Bees to The Lantern Theatre on Saturday 28 November, a solo character comedy that blends original songs and puppets to look at growing up with undiagnosed ADHD. It's Bergeron's first solo show, and it's loosely based on her own life.
The story follows Lola, a salon owner who's spent years faking sanity and self-esteem, with a couple of puppets helping her along: Shame Parrot and the media maven Moda Monde. The show jumps across decades and places, from 1970s Los Angeles to 1990s London, and it frames an ADHD diagnosis as a gameshow called WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?.
There's a personal thread running through it, too. Bergeron is a Los Angeles-born writer and performer who wrote the piece after being diagnosed with severe, mixed-presentation ADHD at the age of 52. Much of the show deals with growing up with that undiagnosed ADHD inside a fundamentalist Christian household, so the comedy comes from a very specific, lived-in place.
