Today is Saturday, 4 April 2026, and the Brighton seafront is looking particularly lively as the Volk's Electric Railway (VER) kicks off its new season. This historic line, which has been part of our coastline since Magnus Volk opened it in 1883, is officially back in action for the Easter weekend. It remains the oldest operating electric railway in the world, running for about a mile along Madeira Drive. For those planning a trip today or tomorrow, the trains generally depart every 15 minutes, and the one-way journey between the terminals takes between 10 and 15 minutes. There is no need to book in advance; you can just head to the stations and buy your tickets on the day. The railway will continue to operate daily from now until the end of October, with more frequent services and longer hours starting in late May as we move into the peak summer season.

The big news for families this weekend is the launch of a brand new interactive treasure hunt designed specifically for children. While the railway has always been a hit for the views, this new activity adds a layer of engagement for younger passengers as they travel between the three stations. If you are starting at the western end, you will find the Aquarium Station near the Brighton Palace Pier and the Sea Life Centre. This station houses the Visitor Centre and the Milk Bar Café, and it is fully accessible with ramps and adapted toilets. It is a good spot to get oriented before heading east toward the Marina. Along the route, the train stops at Halfway Station, which is conveniently located near the children's playground, Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf, and the Yellowave Beach Sports Centre. This stop was originally known as Paston Place when it opened in 1884 and has served as a hub for coastal activities for over a century.
The journey concludes at Black Rock Station, the eastern terminal situated near Brighton Marina. From here, it is a short walk to the shops, restaurants, and cinema at the Marina, or you can access the start of the Undercliff Walk leading toward Saltdean. The railway itself has seen significant investment in recent years, including a £1.6 million restoration project that funded the reconstruction of the Aquarium station and the refurbishment of several original carriages. This commitment to heritage helped the VER win the Heritage Railway of the Year Award in 2024. The line operates with seven electric carriages and a diesel locomotive named PW, maintaining a 2 ft 8½ in gauge. For those looking for more Easter activities today, the Brighton Palace Pier is also hosting its annual Easter Egg Hunt from 10:00 to 16:00, which runs through Sunday, 5 April.
