Summer is finally here, and if you are looking to swap the pebble beaches of Brighton for a day trip into the Sussex countryside, there are plenty of picturesque spots just a short drive or train ride away. One of the most unique destinations to explore this season is the historic village of Bosham, located in Chichester Harbour in West Sussex. Often called the 'Venice of England' because its roads and footpaths regularly disappear beneath the high tide, Bosham is steeped in history. It has Roman roots, links to the legend of King Canute, and a connection to King Harold II, who sailed from here in 1064 before the Battle of Hastings. If you visit, you can walk along the King Charles III England Coast Path, check out the local sailing club, or browse the arts and crafts at the Bosham Walk. For food and drink, the historic Anchor Bleu pub on the High Street has been serving pints since 1741 and features a terrace with sea views. Other local options include the Shoreside Cafe, The Crate, and Marwick's Brasserie.

Beyond the coast, the wider Sussex countryside is dotted with historic villages that make for perfect summer escapes. Alfriston, nestled on the Cuckmere River, is home to the Clergy House—the very first property bought by the National Trust—and great dining spots like Poco and Wingrove House. Further west, the town of Arundel offers its famous castle founded in 1067 and hosts its annual ten-day Arundel Festival of the Arts. If you prefer cobbled streets and medieval timber buildings, Rye is famous for Mermaid Street and the historic Mermaid Inn. For those who love antiques, Petworth boasts dozens of shops within a short walk of Petworth House. Other quiet spots worth a wander include East Dean, which features the historic Tiger Inn, and Lurgashall, located near Blackdown Hill, the highest point in West Sussex.
If your main goal for a day trip is finding a great meal, there are several highly-rated culinary destinations just outside Brighton. In Hurstpierpoint, The Fig Tree offers seasonal menus and holds a five-star food hygiene rating. Nearby in Hassocks, the Artelium Wine Estate provides a contemporary setting where you can book vineyard tours or enjoy dining at the Artelium Kitchen from Thursday to Sunday. If you decide to stay closer to home, you can always wrap up your day back in Brighton at The Cricketers on Black Lion Street. Established in 1547, it is the city's oldest pub and features a classic Victorian interior, including a room dedicated to the author Graham Greene.
