The Sussex Peasant Mobile Markets in Brighton and Hove

The Sussex Peasant, founded by Ed Johnstone, operates as a mobile farm shop and cooperative of eighteen small-scale, ethically and environmentally conscious local farms. The initiative works under a direct model where seventy pence of every pound spent goes straight to the producers, helping to maintain a transparent supply chain and reduce transportation emissions. What started as a single converted horsebox has grown into a fleet of four mobile shops with eleven staff members, serving eleven different communities across the region. These mobile markets function as social hubs, connecting residents directly with local food sources and the people behind the produce. The project was recently recognized with a Silver Award in the 'Connecting People and the Countryside' category of the CPRE Sussex Countryside Awards.

For those looking to visit the markets in Brighton and Hove, there are several weekly locations to choose from. On Thursdays, the mobile shop sets up at The Pepper Pot near Queen's Park on Tower Road from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, and outside PLATF9RM at Hove Town Hall during the same hours. Fridays bring the market to St George's Church in Kemptown and St Ann’s Well Gardens on Nizells Avenue from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, alongside a stop at St Andrew's Church on Church Road in Hove. On Saturdays, you can find them at Preston Park on Preston Park Avenue and Hove Park by the Droveway from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Sunday locations include Port Hall outside The Chimney House in Brighton and Poets Corner at Stoneham Park in Hove. A Click & Collect service is also available, allowing customers to order meat online for collection at any of these weekly market stops.
