It’s officially the best time of year for snowdrops! Today is Sunday, February 8th, and we are right in the middle of the peak season for these delicate white flowers across Sussex. If you’re looking to shake off the last of the winter chill and see some spectacular displays, many local gardens are opening their gates this week and throughout the rest of February.

For those of us based near Brighton, some of the most charming spots are just a short drive away, often opening under the National Garden Scheme (NGS). These smaller, private gardens usually require pre-booking, so it’s worth checking the NGS website now to secure your spot.
Starting this week, you can head north to Pembury House in Clayton (BN6 9PH). This three-acre country garden, set in the South Downs National Park, is renowned for its woodland snowdrops and hellebores. They are open every Thursday and Friday this month, starting on February 12th and 13th, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. The £12 admission fee includes coffee and cake, which is a perfect incentive for a winter outing. Similarly, The Old Vicarage in Washington (RH20 4AS) is opening every Thursday in February, including February 12th, 19th, and 26th. This three-and-a-half-acre garden has planted over 2,000 snowdrops and mixed bulbs, offering stunning views of the North Downs. Entry is £10, and pre-booking is essential.
If you are a serious snowdrop enthusiast, or 'galanthophile', you might want to visit Whitemans Close in Cuckfield (RH17 5DE). This small, sheltered cottage garden boasts an impressive collection of 150 different named varieties of snowdrops. They are open on multiple dates this week and next, including Tuesday 10th, Thursday 12th, and Saturday 14th February. Admission is £9, including refreshments, but remember to book ahead.
Moving west towards the coast, Highdown Gardens in Worthing (BN12 6FB) is always a reliable choice. The gardens themselves are free to enter and open daily, but if you want a deeper dive into the collection, they are running special Snowdrop Identification tours on Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th February. These tours, led by the curator, cost £9 and cover identification techniques and care tips. Highdown is also participating in the NGS on those same days, offering entry by donation.
Further west, Sandhill Farm House in Rogate (GU31 5HU) is hosting a dedicated Snowdrop Day next Sunday, February 15th, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm (£10 entry). This garden is cleverly designed into different rooms, including a woodland area planted specifically for winter interest. Just the following day, Monday, February 16th, Denmans Garden in Fontwell (BN18 0SU) is open for the NGS from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm (£10 entry for adults). This Grade II listed garden is known for its contemporary design and year-round structure.
For those planning a weekend trip further east, Great Dixter in Northiam (TN31 6PH) is holding its Winter Open Weekends on February 21st-22nd and February 28th-March 1st. The gardens are open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, and you can book a special Winter Interest Tour at 10:00 am on those weekend mornings for £20. Also in East Sussex, Bates Green Garden in Arlington (BN26 6SH) starts its regular opening season on Wednesday, February 25th, and continues every Wednesday and Saturday thereafter. Entry is £10, and they offer light lunches in their Bluebell Barn.
Finally, if you prefer a grander scale, the National Trust and Kew Gardens sites offer reliable daily viewing. Nymans (RH17 6EB) near Haywards Heath has its 'Snowdrop Watch' running all month, with the best displays in the Wall Garden. Wakehurst (RH17 6TN), Kew’s wild botanic garden, is also open daily, and mid-February is noted as the best time to see the snowdrops in their Winter Garden. Both offer expansive grounds for a long winter walk, ensuring you get your fill of those beautiful white blooms before spring truly takes hold.
