The main offer is the 6-week courses for beginners and intermediate potters. The hand-building course runs for six weeks in 2.5-hour sessions. The first five weeks are for modelling and the last week is for glazing. Each class has a maximum of seven students, and you learn coiling, pinch pots and soft and hard slabs. The £250 price covers teaching, clay, basic glazes and basic decoration. For an extra £40 you can add an optional 2.5-hour wheel-throwing session, where the wheel is shared. Firing costs £1 per 100g of finished work, which usually comes to between £15 and £20. If you miss a class, you can attend one make-up session per term. Pieces take about two weeks to fire after the glazing week, and you collect them from the Brighton studio. They use high-end stoneware clay and a wide range of glazes, including underglazes and slips.
For the November and December 2026 courses, there are three weekly slots. The Saturday morning class runs from 10:00 to 12:30 on 31 October, then on 7, 14, 21 and 28 November, and 12 December. The Monday lunchtime class runs from 12:00 to 14:30 on 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 November, and 7 December. The Wednesday evening class runs from 19:00 to 21:30 on 4, 11, 18 and 25 November, and 2 and 9 December. Monday evening classes also run from 19:00 to 21:30.
If you only want a one-off, there are shorter options. A half-day taster workshop costs £80 for one to eight guests. A half-day throwing experience for two people costs £100, and a full-day throwing experience for two costs £200. One-to-one tuition is £45 an hour. Groups can book a mug-making workshop for £60 (four to 35 guests), a team-building workshop for £50 (six to 40 guests), or a hen party booby cup workshop for £45. The studio also offers a mobile service for events.
The woodland Raku workshop takes place at Knowlands Farm, Spithurst Road, Barcombe, Lewes, BN8 5EF, from 11:00 to 16:00. It costs £130 per person and includes materials, a hand-built vase, a tile and a picnic lunch, with tea, coffee and biscuits. The pieces are fired outdoors at 1010°C using a traditional Japanese method. The kiln is reduced with sawdust and newspaper, and the pieces are quenched in water. You take them home the same day. The workshop suits beginners and experienced potters. Children must be at least 12 and come with an adult, who pays a separate ticket. The site has ancient oaks, resident pigs and rabbits, and a shelter with running water. The walk from the parking area takes about two minutes over uneven ground, and a compost toilet is about 20 metres from the shelter. There is no public transport, so you will need a taxi from Cooksbridge (2.5 miles) or Lewes station (5 miles).
You can book by calling Alice on 07733 028434 or emailing contact@hotfoxpottery.com. Full online payment is preferred, though two instalments are possible. The studio is listed as open from 10:00 to 21:30.
