If you have not yet stepped into The Flint House, it is worth knowing exactly where it sits. The restaurant occupies 13 Hanningtons Lane, right in the middle of Brighton's Lanes, on a pedestrian-only street that was created behind the old Hanningtons department store as part of a wider renovation around 2018 and 2019. It is owned and run by Ben and Pamela McKellar, who co-founded the Gingerman Restaurant Group, so the place comes with a fair amount of experience behind it.

The layout is part of the appeal. There is counter-level dining for a more casual feel, a glamorous first-floor restaurant and cocktail bar for something a bit more occasion, and a rooftop terrace to take in the surroundings. The food follows a small-plates, tapas-style format, with meat, fish and veggie options all on the table, and the cooking is described as fresh and simple, leaning on modern British influences with Asian ideas woven in. Among the dishes you will come across are pickled shiitake in tempura batter, sweetcorn fritters, smoked anchovies on focaccia, char-grilled mackerel, a courgette ribbons salad and slow-cooked ox cheek.
On price, it sits in the middle ground. Small plates tend to run between £12 and £15, with snacks starting at £5.50, and there is a lunchtime set menu at two courses for £17 or three courses if you want the full spread. It was highly placed in the 2025 Brighton Restaurant Awards and made Condé Nast Traveller's list of the twenty best restaurants in Brighton for 2026, and it holds a five-star Food Standards Agency rating as of 7 January 2026. The McKellars' Gingerman Group has been going since 1998 and runs The Gingerman on Norfolk Square, The Ginger Pig in Hove and The Ginger Fox in Henfield, so there is a wider family of restaurants behind the name. The group also does some quiet good, donating from puddings and children's meals to Action Medical Research.
Opening hours are the one detail that varies slightly between sources, with most saying Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm to 10pm, though some list it as open every day across that same window, so it is worth a quick check before you head down. Either way, it is a reliable fixture of the Lanes, and whether you are there for a few small plates at the counter or a cocktail on the first floor, it is a Brighton spot that has earned its place on the city's best-of lists.
