With the arrival of spring, the wellness scene around Brighton is expanding, particularly for those who enjoy the Finnish tradition of heat and cold. A significant addition is the South Downs Sauna Lewes, which is set to open its doors on 27 April 2026. Located near the South Downs Way, this woodland retreat focuses on the 'löyly' experience—the steam created by pouring water over hot stones. The site features a Finnish wood barrel sauna and a secluded outdoor area with a drench bucket, copper shower, and a firepit under the trees. Co-founded by Anni Townend and Simone Thorn, the space is designed for hikers, cyclists, and anyone looking for a quiet spot in nature. Community sessions are priced at £18 for 75 minutes, though there is a launch offer of £15 for selected dates between 27 April and 9 May 2026. They also have a weaving workshop scheduled for 16 May with Matilda Grover.

Beyond this new opening, several other outdoor sauna experiences are accessible within a short trip from the city. Stanmer Sauna Garden CIC operates within the 500-year-old woodland of Stanmer Park, offering a wood sauna and a cold plunge stream. For those who prefer a lakeside setting, The Nomadic Sauna collaborates with Swanborough Lakes in Iford to provide wood-fired sessions and wild swimming from Thursday to Sunday. If you would rather stay closer to the coast, Beach Box Sauna on Brighton Beach and Saunadelic at Hove Lagoon both offer the chance to combine a sauna session with a dip in the sea or a freshwater plunge. In the city centre, Sauna in the Lanes provides a Nordic wood sauna in a courtyard setting on Middle Street, with sessions starting at £8.
For a more immersive countryside stay, the South Downs National Park hosts several dedicated wellness spaces. The Lookout Retreat sits about 20 minutes from Brighton and includes a spa space with a hot tub and a seasonal cold plunge. Nearby, The Sussex Shala offers a yurt-based sanctuary for weekend stays, while Westerlands focuses on residential workshops and nature-based rhythms. If you are looking for traditional spa facilities, the local hotels like the Brighton Harbour Hotel & Spa, The Grand, and the Queens Hotel provide more conventional indoor environments. Whether it is a community sauna in the woods or a private session by the beach, the options for nature-immersed relaxation have become quite varied this season.
