The American Express Stadium has shifted its focus over the last year, moving away from being a place you only visit for ninety minutes of football. Since opening last spring, The Terrace has established itself as a permanent fixture for the local community and fans. It is currently the largest dedicated fan zone in the Premier League, featuring an indoor space that holds a thousand people, which is useful during the colder months. When the weather is better, the capacity expands to three thousand by utilizing the outdoor areas. The design uses a triangular structure that fits into the natural slope of the South Downs. Inside, the space is centered around a double-height events area with wrap-around digital screens and LED media that display sports or provide a backdrop for live performances.

The food and drink setup is a departure from standard stadium catering. They have partnered with local Sussex vendors to provide a variety of street food options available year-round. BITES by Steven Edwards, led by the MasterChef: The Professionals winner, serves dry-aged beef burgers and hot dogs, while Lost Boys Chicken offers signature poultry dishes well-known in the Brighton food scene. There is also a rotational concept called Loaded, which focuses on flatbreads with toppings like barbacoa beef or marinated chicken, and Melts Café handles the lighter side with toasties, milkshakes, and doughnuts. For those looking for a snack, they have introduced fruit crumbles with various fillings. Ordering is handled digitally through the official club app or via kiosks on the ground floor, which helps manage the flow of people and reduces time spent waiting in line.
Beyond the matchday experience, the venue functions as a general entertainment hub with a schedule of events. As we are currently in late February, the upcoming weeks feature several screenings and themed nights. The Cheltenham Festival will be shown live from March 10th to 12th, with a preview night scheduled for March 3rd. For those looking for something different, Big John’s Bosh Bingo is taking place on March 27th, followed by a tribute performance from U2 Baby on the 28th. The calendar also includes a Mother’s Day lunch on March 15th and a Father’s Day Fun Day in June, which features games like mini-golf and giant chess. They have a Eurovision party and a Harry Styles tribute show booked for later in the year. It has also become a spot for away game screenings, allowing fans to watch matches together when they cannot travel.
The facility is split into two levels, with the mezzanine housing the American Express Clubhouse. This area is reserved for cardholders on matchdays, allowing them to bring up to three guests to watch from an elevated position. On non-matchdays, the entire space is used for private hire, accommodating corporate conferences or product launches. For daily visitors, Melts Café is open from 9 am to 2 pm on weekdays, providing a place for coffee near the university campuses. Accessibility was a factor in the design; disabled supporters can order food from any kiosk and have it delivered to their seating area to avoid navigating through crowds. It is a functional addition to the stadium that integrates the venue into the daily life of the city.
