A season of four documentaries on environmental and social change at Patch at Bobby's, with discussions and activities following each screening.
Transition Bournemouth are kicking off a documentary screening season at Patch at Bobby's in Bournemouth Square, with the first film showing on Tuesday 29 September at 7pm. It's the start of a run of four documentaries, each one focusing on environmental and social change, and each followed by a discussion. The whole thing is put on by Transition Towns Bournemouth, a local group that works on community-led responses to the climate and ecological crisis.
The films are the main event, but the discussions that follow are a big part of the night. The idea is to watch something and then talk it through with the people around you, rather than just heading home when the credits roll. Peter Allen, a trustee of Transition Towns Bournemouth, says the films are intended to inspire people to take action in their own communities, so the conversation afterwards is where the screening turns into something more.
If you're not already familiar with them, Transition Towns Bournemouth do a fair bit more than just put on films. They run a Repair Café, where you can bring in broken things and get them fixed instead of binning them, and they're currently planning to launch a Library of Things at Parkstone United Reformed Church in Poole — a place where you can borrow tools and equipment you only need once in a while, rather than everyone on the street owning their own drill or ladder. The screening season fits right into that way of working: watching something that gets you thinking, then talking about how to actually do something about it here in Bournemouth.
