A charity fundraising padel tournament run by ACTA2 Alliance UK to support research into the rare genetic condition MSMDS.
Cross Court Padel in Bournemouth is hosting Rally for Research on Saturday 22 August, a charity padel tournament run by ACTA2 Alliance UK. It's the very first tournament to take place at the brand-new venue, so it's a double opening: a new sporting community for the town and a fundraiser for a rare condition. The day runs from 10:00 to 14:00, and entry is £60 per player, which includes a hot drink and pizza.
ACTA2 Alliance UK was set up by Rosie and Jonny Griffiths after their daughter Lily was diagnosed as a baby with Multisystemic Smooth Muscle Dysfunction Syndrome, or MSMDS. It's a rare genetic condition that affects smooth muscle throughout the body, and the charity's work is split between funding research into treatments and connecting families, clinicians and researchers on an international scale. The tournament is one of the ways they raise the money to keep that research going.
If you've never played padel, it's a bit like a mix of tennis and squash, played in a glass-walled court. This being the first tournament at Cross Court Padel, it's as much about getting the local padel scene off the ground as it is about the fundraising. You'll be playing for a cause that's close to a local family, and the morning is set up to be as much about the community as the competition.
