Manhunter

Manhunter is back on the big screen at ODEON Bournemouth this September, with two screenings scheduled for Sunday 27 and Tuesday 29. Both start at 5.30pm, so it's an early evening session rather than a late one — the kind of time that lets you get home with your night still ahead of you.

For those who haven't seen it, Manhunter is the 1986 thriller directed by Michael Mann, based on Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon. It's the first film to feature the character Hannibal Lecter, though he's a secondary presence here compared to the lead, Will Graham, the retired FBI profiler who's pulled back into service to track a serial killer. Mann's version is known for its cold, neon-lit look and its focus on the psychological toll of the hunt, and it's a film that works best when you can actually see the detail on a proper cinema screen.

Seeing it in a cinema is a different experience from watching it at home. The sound design and the atmospheric, synth-heavy score are built for a theatre, and there's something about the tension of a thriller that lands better when you're sitting in the dark with a room full of people. If you've only ever seen the later Hannibal films, this is where the whole thing started, and it's a good place to go back to.

Both screenings are at ODEON Bournemouth, in the BH2 complex at the Bournemouth Leisure Complex on Exeter Crescent. That puts it right in the heart of the town centre, so it's easy to get to whether you're coming from the seafront or from further inland. The screenings are at 5.30pm on Sunday 27 and Tuesday 29 September.
