Botanical Gelli Printing with Jasmine

Jasmine Wheeler is running a botanical gelli printing workshop at The Old School House on Wednesday 30 September. It's a hands-on session where you work with gelli plates to make prints from plants, so if you've got a few bits of greenery from the garden or a walk, you're halfway there.

For those who haven't come across it, gelli printing uses a flexible gel plate rather than a traditional press. You roll paint onto the plate, arrange your botanical elements on top, and then pull a print from the surface. It's a bit more intuitive than some of the more technical printmaking methods, and because you're working with natural forms, no two prints ever come out the same. Jasmine will be there to walk you through the process, so you don't need to have any prior experience to get something decent on paper.

One of the best bits is that all materials are provided, so you just need to turn up. You'll leave with your own prints, and you'll have a better handle on how to keep the practice going at home. It's the kind of thing that works as well for a complete beginner as it does for someone who already dabbles in art and wants to try a different way of working.

The venue is The Old School House, known as TOSH, a non-profit in Boscombe based in a Grade II listed heritage building just a few minutes from the seafront. It's more than just a place for workshops, though: it houses artist studios, coworking spaces, and space hire, and it runs an arts career development course. The studios there range from 6.5 to 9 square metres and are let on a monthly fee of £185 to £250, with 24/7 secure access, heating, WiFi, power and onsite parking. Spaces for the workshop are limited to six, so it'll be a small, focused group rather than a crowded room.
