A three-hour drag king masterclass led by local legend Dandy Issues, covering persona development, makeup, costume, and live comedy performance.
Dandy Issues is running a drag king workshop at The Old School House in Boscombe on Saturday 14 November, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. It's a three-hour session with breaks built in, and Dandy Issues is a local drag king billed as a 'Drag King Legend' around here. The whole thing is open to anyone wanting to get started in drag, from total novices to creatives looking to expand what they're already doing.
There's a fair bit to get through in one afternoon. It starts with the basics: what drag king is and where it comes from. From there, it moves into the practical side of building a drag persona and acting from scratch, and the aesthetics of masculine and alternative drag makeup and costume. There are practical exercises to help grow your confidence on stage, and room to explore everything from lip-sync to live comedy. It's pitched as suitable for anyone playing with their gender or exploring alternative drag as an artform.
One of the better things about it is that you don't need to turn up with a kit bag. Makeup and basic costume parts are provided, so you only need to bring a pen and paper. The venue is wheelchair accessible, though there's no BSL or audio description available.
