Free Summer Reptile Ranger Places in Dorset

Finding activities to keep children entertained during the long school holidays can be a challenge, but a local initiative in Dorset is offering a practical solution for families this summer. The Reptile Academy, a non-profit social enterprise based at Manor Farm in Gussage St Michael, has announced that it is providing more than 200 free places for its upcoming Reptile Ranger Holiday Activity and Food (HAF) Programme. Running from Thursday 23 July 2026 to Thursday 27 August 2026, the sessions are designed to offer hands-on educational experiences with exotic animals while ensuring participants receive a nutritious meal.

The programme is aimed at young people aged 8 to 16, though seven-year-olds can also attend if they have an older sibling enrolled. Funded by Dorset Council, Hampshire County Council, and the Department for Education, the free places are allocated to children who are eligible for free school meals and have a valid HAF code, as well as other vulnerable young people, such as those on the special educational needs (SEN) register. For families who do not qualify for the funded spots, paid places are available at £42 per child for the standard four-hour session, which runs from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. There is also an option to extend the day until 4:00 PM for an additional £24.

Each session is structured to combine learning with physical activity and healthy eating. Participants will get involved in practical tasks like animal care, conservation, and basic science activities, including microscopy. The curriculum is built around animal welfare principles, and those who complete the programme receive a certificate accredited by the Royal Society of Biology. Alongside the educational aspect, the day includes at least an hour of physical exercise, healthy snacks, and a hot lunch. The academy's facilities at Unit 7, Manor Farm are fully accessible, featuring single-level access, wheelchair ramps, and accessible toilets, with trained staff available to support children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.

Led by founder Dr. Jake Weeks, a specialist in herpetology, The Reptile Academy houses over 100 animals, including more than 24 species of snakes, lizards, frogs, and toads. The organisation operates as a registered Centre of Excellence and is the only UK exotic species educator with organisational membership of the Royal Society of Biology.
