Silvia Gribaudi's dance piece GRACES, part of the THIS IS DANCE season, explores the intersection of human and abstract through raw, empathetic performance.
Silvia Gribaudi brings her piece GRACES to the Patrick Studio on Friday 20 November, as part of the THIS IS DANCE season. The show runs from Monday 16 November to Sunday 22 November, so if Friday doesn't work, there are plenty of other dates to choose from. It's about an hour long with no interval, so you're in and out in one go.
GRACES takes its title and its starting point from The Three Graces, the sculpture Antonio Canova worked on between 1812 and 1817. On stage, three male figures carry the piece into a space somewhere between the human and the abstract, where male and female meet without roles and dance to the rhythm of nature itself. Gribaudi turns imperfection into an art form, working in a direct, raw and deeply empathetic comic style that blurs the boundaries between dance, theatre and performance. It's the kind of work that sits comfortably between genres rather than sticking to one.
The show is part of THIS IS DANCE, an international dance season in Birmingham run by a collective of presenting partners, co-producers and commissioning organisations including Fabric, Birmingham Hippodrome, Birmingham Rep, Midlands Arts Centre, Fierce Festival and Sampad Arts. Now in its second year, the partnership stages work by local, national and international artists across a range of venues to strengthen the city's reputation for bold and adventurous performance. Gribaudi's GRACES fits that brief well enough.
