Stand-up show 'Vexy Beasts' by Rachel Fairburn, billed as the 'Rock 'n' Roll Star of British Comedy', at The Glee Club.
Rachel Fairburn brings her new show Vexy Beasts to The Glee Club on Saturday 24 October, starting at 20:00. It's her first time on the Birmingham stage this tour, and it's a bit of a departure from what you might expect from a standard stand-up set.
Fairburn is coming off the back of Side Eye, her critically acclaimed 2024 show, and Vexy Beasts is built from the ground up with brand-new stand-up and all-new character comedy. The character side is where the title really earns its keep: she brings a whole cast of personalities to the stage, from nepo babies with novels to sell and middle-class rock stars with a struggle, to terrifying mothers and bitter theatre ushers. They're all threaded together with her biting social commentary, so the characters aren't just there for a laugh — they're the vehicles for the things she's actually getting at.
If you haven't seen her before, it helps to know how she's been described. Rolling Stone called her the 'Rock 'n' Roll Star of British Comedy', and critics have pointed to her as a skilled impressionist, bright, brave and 'bitterly enjoyable', with a commanding, thrilling and utterly addictive presence. That 'bitterly enjoyable' bit sums up the vibe well: it's sharp, it's observant, and it doesn't pull its punches.
