Practical introduction to agro-ecological seed saving with hands-on demonstrations and a scything demonstration in the Duncairn Wildflower Meadow.
Belfast Seed Savers are leading a seed saving and scything session at The Duncairn Arts Centre on Saturday 17 October, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. It's a practical introduction to agro-ecological seed saving, run alongside Community Garden Support and the Seed It Union. The main part of the afternoon is hands-on: they'll be showing you how to save seeds from vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit, so you can keep your own varieties going from one season to the next.
There's a second half to the session that takes you out of the workshop and into the Duncairn Wildflower Meadow. Heritage mower Andrew Lintott, who specialises in traditional, biodiversity-friendly land management, will be there with an Austrian scythe. He makes the case for the scythe over mechanical engines and will show you how to assemble, sharpen and wield one safely. It's a chance to see a slower, quieter way of working the land in action.
Between the two, you'll get a first look at the new Duncairn Seed Library. The Duncairn Arts Centre has put arts at the heart of North Belfast since 2014 and runs the Seed Library as part of its ongoing work with the community, so this session fits right into what they do there. The whole thing is suitable for all ages and is supported by Live Here Love Here.
