A monthly farmers market with local produce, prepared foods, and family-friendly activities in the Zilker community.
Zilker Farmers Market launches at Zilker Elementary School on Sunday, October 18, and then settles into a monthly rhythm on the second Sunday of every month starting November 8. It's a small, neighborhood gathering built by and for the Zilker community, held under the oaks in the teacher parking lot at 1900 Bluebonnet Lane, near Little Zilker Park.
Around 18 vendors will be there, with seasonal produce, eggs, dairy, meat, honey, coffee, and prepared meals on the tables. It's a Texas Department of Agriculture Certified Farmers Market run by a nonprofit corporation with an all-volunteer board that's currently seeking 501(c)(3) recognition. The mission they've set is to improve neighborhood access to fresh, healthy food and to educate the public about nutrition, seasonal eating, gardening, sustainable agriculture, and local food systems.
Alongside the farmers and ranchers, there will be kids' activities, and leashed dogs are welcome to shop. Live, gently played music by Austin musicians is what makes it feel like a neighborhood gathering: out of respect for the nearby homes in this residential area, the market asks for calm, low-volume, family-friendly ambient music with minimal amplification. The whole thing runs on a limited nonprofit budget.
