A workshop by the Writers' League of Texas where true crime authors and journalists discuss craft, ethics, and research in writing captivating true crime stories.
The Writers' League of Texas is hosting its October Third Thursday at BookPeople on Thursday, October 15, from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. The night is built around true crime, with authors and journalists Bryan Burrough, Maurice Chammah, and Beverly Lowry on the panel. A WLT staff member will moderate the conversation.
The talk focuses on the craft and ethics of the genre: how to tell true crime stories accurately and humanely while still keeping an audience captivated. The three will share tips on research, craft, and ethics, and the conversation is open to both writers and readers. It's the kind of session that works as well if you're working on your own project as it does if you just read a lot of true crime and want to hear how it actually gets made.
This is part of WLT's Third Thursday, a monthly gathering that brings together panelists to talk about topics of interest to writers and readers. It's also a chance to meet other writers in the local literary community, so if you're looking for your people in the Austin writing scene, this is a good place to start. The League rounds out its year with a mix of in-person classes and events across the state, free virtual programs on craft and publishing, and monthly Zoom write-in sessions.
