A writing workshop for storytellers to harness their writing potential and embrace their unique voice.
The African American Cultural and Heritage Facility is hosting the Write it Yourself Workshop on Saturday, September 19, starting at 11 AM. It's a writing workshop for storytellers, and the whole thing is about harnessing your writing potential and embracing your unique voice. If you've got stories you've been sitting on or a way of telling them that feels like it belongs to you, this is where you bring them.
The workshop takes place at the African American Cultural and Heritage Facility (AACHF), located at 912 E 11th St in East Austin. The facility gets its name from the state-designated African American Cultural Heritage District, and it houses the historic Dedrick Hamilton House, which was built around 1880 in one of East Austin's earliest African American communities. Today, that house serves as an African American Visitors Center and Art Studio.
If you've walked by the building, you've probably seen the mural on the façade: a 6-foot by 25-foot glass and ceramic tile mosaic by artist Reginald C. Adams. The City of Austin's Art in Public Places program commissioned it in 2011, and it was dedicated on March 1, 2013. It depicts 89 people who advanced the African American community in Austin. The facility also houses the Greater Austin Black Chamber.
