World premiere screening of the Spanish horror film 'UPIRO' at the Fantastic Fest film festival.
UPIRO is having its world premiere at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar as part of Fantastic Fest, with screenings on Friday, September 18, at 8 PM and Tuesday, September 22, at 5 PM. It's a Spanish film from 2026, directed by Óscar Martín, and it runs 106 minutes.
The story takes us back to 1755, when a woman named Ana is sent to a cloistered convent. Once there, she finds several novices suffering from a mysterious illness. With the help of an unorthodox Franciscan, she starts digging into the dark events surrounding the monastery, and the trail leads to an ancient legend that Enlightenment society would rather leave buried: a bloodthirsty upiro. If you're not familiar with the word, an upiro is a type of vampire from Slavic folklore, and that's where the film gets its title.
UPIRO is one of the titles in the 21st edition of Fantastic Fest, which runs from September 17 to 24 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. The festival bills itself as the most reliably eclectic and unapologetically strange American film festival on the fall calendar, and this year's lineup leans into that. Festival director Lisa Dreyer says this edition doubles down on introducing the world to exciting new talent and launching filmmakers' careers, and a world premiere like this fits right into that mission.
