Wild Child at 20th Annual Bat Fest

Wild Child headline the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge on Saturday, September 5, as part of the 20th annual Bat Fest. Roadway Productions is putting it on, and it's one of the few festivals in the city that takes place on a bridge—the site runs along the bridge and below it from the Statesman Lot.

The lineup is a long one. Alongside Wild Child, you'll find Sheck Wes from Harlem, Ben Kweller from Dripping Springs, and a deep roster of Austin names: Brooke Michelle, Mélat, Curtis Lee, J Soulja, Patricia Vonne, Elijah Delgado, EddieAngel, Sertified, Nagavalli, and Blakchyl. Jelly Ellington comes in from Asheville, and Tomar Williams and DJ Grip round out the bill. It's a mix of local regulars and a few faces from outside Texas.

The music is only one part of the day. There's a kids' zone, food and drink vendors, and about 25 arts and crafts vendors. The whole thing is built around the bridge's most famous residents: Austin is home to the world's largest urban bat colony, around 1.5 million Mexican Free-Tailed bats that fly out every night during spring and summer from under the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge in downtown. If you've lived here a while, you know the routine—the colony emerges in a massive stream, and the festival is timed to that.
