Live dancehall music with Matt Mouton and Weldon Henson at the historic Broken Spoke venue.
Weldon Henson and Matt Mouton are playing the Broken Spoke on Tuesday, October 13. It's a double bill that stretches across the evening, with Mouton taking the early slot from 6 PM to 8 PM and Henson taking over at 8 PM for a dancehall set. There's no cover for the music, so you can drop in whenever you like.
If you're not familiar with the place, the Broken Spoke is one of Austin's oldest institutions, opened in 1964 by James M. White. It's built its name on a simple formula: live music, homestyle meals — the chicken fried steak is the most famous thing on the menu — and two-step dance lessons. The bands play for tips, and the venue has made a night of its Tuesday residency, with dancehall sets and lessons running alongside the restaurant service.

That's exactly how this night works. Mouton opens the evening with a two-hour set from 6 PM to 8 PM, and then Henson takes over at 8 PM with a dancehall set. If you've never danced two-step before, there's a lesson at 8:15 PM for $10, so you can get the steps down before the floor fills up. The music is free, the food is coming out of the kitchen all night, and the bands play for tips. The Broken Spoke is at 3201 S. Lamar Blvd, and the whole thing kicks off at 6 PM.
