Screening of the 1981 documentary URGh! A Music War, presented by The Professors of Urgh! in partnership with KUTX and Sound Unseen Austin.
AFS Cinema is screening URGH! A Music War on Thursday, November 19, at 7 PM. The film is presented in partnership with KUTX and Sound Unseen Austin, and it's being introduced by The Professors of Urgh!, Chaki and Chris Slusarenko.
Directed by Derek Burbridge and released in 1981, URGH! A Music War is one of the ground-zero documents of the late '70s and early '80s New Music Scene. It's rarely been seen on the big screen in anything close to its complete state, so this is a good chance to catch it as it was meant to be seen. The film gathers 34 bands, and the range is wide: you'll find the well-known names like The Police, Devo, X, Joan Jett, XTC, The Go-Go's and Gary Numan alongside the true underground, including Dead Kennedys, Magazine, The Cramps, Pere Ubu, Au Pairs and Klaus Nomi. Each band was shot and recorded so that they sound and perform authentically, rather than being edited into a single mold.
The Professors of Urgh!, Chaki and Chris Slusarenko, have spent years digging into the film, making it the subject of more than 55 podcast episodes about its wheres, whys and hows. They'll be bringing that context to the screening, so you'll get more than just the movie itself. The whole thing runs an hour and 36 minutes.
