World premiere screening of the Spanish horror thriller UPIRO at the Fantastic Fest film festival.
UPIRO makes its world premiere at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar on Tuesday, September 22, at 5 PM. It's a Spanish thriller directed by Óscar Martín, running 106 minutes, and it arrives as part of Fantastic Fest.
The story takes us back to 1755, right in the middle of the Age of Enlightenment. Ana is sent to a remote, cloistered convent to atone for her sins, but once she's inside, she finds the novices wasting away from a mysterious blood disease. With the help of an unorthodox Franciscan, she starts digging into the monastery's dark secrets and uncovers an ancient legend that Enlightenment society would rather leave buried: a bloodthirsty upiro. It's a period piece that leans into the gothic, pitting the era's focus on reason against something far older and harder to explain.
That fits right in with the festival it's premiering at. This is the 21st edition of Fantastic Fest, which is billed as the largest genre film festival in the United States. It runs every September at the Alamo Drafthouse and focuses on horror, sci-fi, and action cinema from around the world. This year's lineup includes 35 world premieres, and the festival has a reputation for introducing new talent and launching filmmakers' careers. UPIRO is one of those premieres, so this is the first time it's being shown to an audience.
