Work-in-progress exhibition and pre-screenings of the documentary 'Under Her Name', with cyanotype and origami workshops.
Under Her Name is coming to the Austin History Center on Saturday, December 12 and Sunday, December 13, as a work-in-progress exhibition and pre-screening. ACAN is presenting it alongside the Austin History Center and the Asian American Arts & Culture Initiative.
The exhibition takes you back a hundred years to the early 20th century, when Chinese immigrants first arrived in central Texas. It tells their life experiences through untold family and individual stories, and the material on display is work-in-progress from Under Her Name, a documentary film currently in the making. The whole weekend is built around that film, with pre-screenings and conversations that let you see where the project stands before it's finished.
There's also a hands-on side to it: cyanotype and origami workshops run throughout the weekend, with light refreshments provided. If you're more of a watcher than a maker, you can stick to the screenings and the exhibition, but the workshops give you something to do while you're there. The documentary itself is the thread that ties it all together, so you'll get a sense of the film's direction alongside the family histories it's drawing from.
